Interior Design Associate
AB design studio is a diverse group of architects, designers and builders who believe in the opportunity to make a difference through design. A classic modernist cabin from the 1950’s was transformed into a soulful retreat for an Interior Designer and her family. The original home, designed by famed Santa Barbara architect Lutah Maria Riggs, was a 2-bedroom, 1 bath home that was expanded and remodeled from foundation to roof. The result is a 3-bedroom, 2.5 bath main residence and 2-bedroom, 1 bath guest house each equipped with relaxing and inviting living spaces for the Owners and their guests to enjoy.

Santa Barbara's AB Design Studio was tasked with remodelling and enlarging a 1954 house that was in disrepair, including a subpar foundation made of stone rubble. REDEFINING AND EXPANDING WHAT IS POSSIBLE FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN A CREATED WORLD
Candidates shall submit a Selected Works Portfolio along with a Professional Resume & Reference List. Candidates with qualitative and relevant experience will be given priority consideration. The site work, swimming pool and new landscaping were completed in a delicate balancing act with careful respect to the existing vegetation, rock formations and oak trees that predominate the site.

The Architect team worked with the Client to create stepped pathways, outdoor dining enclaves and play areas within a central garden courtyard that connects the home to a new pool and guest house. The guest home addition includes expansive decks that connect to the pool area and increase the livability of the home and property. Instead of adding more living space to the main house, the guest house serves as additional living space and bedrooms for their use.

Eight home interiors where mezzanines maximise usable space
While the home's original architect is unknown, there are rumours it was designed by Lutah Maria Riggs – the first female architect in California to be named a fellow of the AIA. In the 1950s, Riggs designed a nearby temple for the Vendanta Society, which drew many bohemians to the area. Plush sofas and cushions beckoned leisure, while woven textures, like beachside breezes, contributed tactile warmth. The true magic lay in the seamless synergy achieved—a space where boundaries between indoors and outdoors vanished.

The goals of the homeowner were simple...create a connection to the site and views, and create a place to relax, vacate and entertain. The juxtaposition of the modern “box” addition to the simple gabled roof structure solved a request to have more volume and a more expressive indoor/outdoor feel for the home. All rooms of the main house were oriented to enjoy ocean views while the guest house enjoys views of the ocean and the mountains behind it.

Our design-visualization process allows us to test ideas and generate concepts quickly, allowing the project team to present a variety of options to the client. Once a design is formalized, we work closely with government agencies to negotiate the permitting process and make the project happen. Once ground is broken, we’re in continuous contact and collaboration with the building team. Utilizing innovative techniques and thoughtful use of materials we explore the potential of each design to translate it into practical, responsible, and buildable projects.
Inside the studio, you’ll find us gathered together around meeting tables and over workstations busily sketching design ideas and building 3D models. Oversized windows and glass doors dissolved into surrounding vistas, intertwining nature with design. Reflective surfaces mirrored the lush surroundings, while rich woods evoked driftwood treasures. Modern tiles, reminiscent of sun-kissed sands, manifested a tactile connection to the beach. Chandeliers suspended like constellations and pendant lights emulating glistening seashells added enchantment to every corner.
It is sometimes preferable to reserve student internships for Student Interns who are currently completing the final two years of their degree or graduate degree programs in order to ensure that the prerequisite skill sets and context needed to gain the full value and experience offered from a 2-3 month internship. Longer term Student internships may also be considered and may provide the insight needed preceding a students decision to enter into a Design ar Architectural degree program. Whatever the case may be, it is AB design studio’s distinct pleasure and responsibility to nurture the next generation of Designers and Architects and as such Student internships are encouraged and a part of the AB design studio culture and experience.
"The house reflects the artistic and Zen qualities of the area's past – a place once inhabited by a collective of bohemian poets, writers and artists – by maintaining original elements and reusing stones found on-site," the team said. Honouring the area's creative and spiritual heritage was a guiding factor for the design team, along with retaining the large boulders that dot the property. By ingeniously blending a neutral palette, warm accents, luxurious finishes, modern tiles, statement lighting, and inviting furnishings, an interiors masterpiece emerges as our designer skillfully intertwined elements to forge a quintessential California Coastal aesthetic. The team also expanded an existing deck, which now wraps around the entire house. The project also involved major changes to the landscape, including the removal of a rear driveway, which allowed for the addition of a fire pit and lawn.
We focus on creating healthy environments that inspire, enhance, and enrich people's lives. In a time of climate change, to succeed, our designs must use energy efficiently and minimize their carbon footprint. We must source materials wisely, mindful of how they were produced and their impact on human health, while embracing new trends such as mass-timber framing and prefab construction. Because it’s inherently greener, we must encourage adaptive re-use whenever possible. We seek out, manage and combine elements of our client's program, budgets and design intentions while collaborating early and often with clients, contractors and the entire building team to maximize collaboration and innovation.
